Role of SMEs in Asia

SMEs play a critical role in Asian economies in generating growth, employment and exports. In general, they comprise the vast bulk of enterprises and account for at least half of value added and employment. Asian SMEs fared better in the 2008-09 downturn than in 1997-08. SMEs generate economic growth by being efficient and competitive and the importance of SMEs will grow as economies develop.
