The five faces of Narayana Murthy

Entrepreneur - Infosys , pioneered the global delivery model that really made Indian the software services outsourcing capital of the world. Mr Murthy founded Infosys in 1981 in Pune with an initial capital of $250, most of which was borrowed from his wife Sudha Murthy. At its inception, he invited six other engineers to join the company.

  • Philanthropist: The Indian IT major established the Infosys Foundation to support the underprivileged sections of the society. Infosys contributes 1% of profit after tax to the Foundation for its campaign to improve the welfare of people in rural areas of India.
  • Educationist: He may not be a teacher but his donations to educational institutions are a standout. e.g. IIT Kanpur and Cornell University among others.
  • Mentor: He has played this role to near perfection, even taking that title at Infosys after he stepped down as chairman. He has nurtured talents through the company as well as to the government and other institutions.
