Here's a look at the Top 10 directors who made their debuts in 2011.

  • Kiran Rao, Dhobi Ghat: The talented wife of Mr Perfectionist Aamir Khan made her debut helmingDhobi Ghat in 2011. The movie got a great opening but failed to click with the audience, though Kiran Rao was lauded for her directorial skills.
    BO fate: The film's budget was about Rs 10 crore and it went on to make about as much more from all sources of revenue.
    Next step: Kiran's next is reportedly based on a concept by Aamir Khan. She is also working on another script with classical music as the backdrop.
  • Parvin Dabas, Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande: Actor and underwater photography enthusiast Pravin Dabas forayed into production and direction with this one.

  • Satyajit Bhatkal, Zokkomon: Satyajit left his lucrative law practice to pursue his passion of making films. He was invited by Aamir Khan to help him on Lagaan and then he directed the famous Chale Chalo, which was the making of Lagaan. His debut film with Taare Zameen Par star Darsheel Safari failed to click but he has promised to comeback with a bang.

  • Abhinay Deo, Game, Delhi Belly: Abhinay, an advertising professional, made his not-so-impressive debut at the start of 2011 with Abhishek Bachchan starrer Game but he got noticed for Aamir Khan's production Delhi Belly, which was an adult comedy.
    BO fate: Delhi Belly a hit and well appreciated.
    Next step: He is taking it one by one.
  • Deepa Sahi, Tere Mere Phere: Actress Deepa Sahi's debut film as director flopped. We doubt she has plans to try her hand at making another film, anytime soon.
  • Luv Ranjan, Pyaar Ka Punchnama: The film's first promo went viral and this was enough to get youngsters to watch the film in theatres. Though the film landed in some trouble with the Censor Board initially, this comedy was well appreciated.

    Next Step: Ranjan and the film's producer Abhishek Pathak are planning a sequel to the film.
  • Remo D'Souza, F.A.L.T.U: Taking a cue from fellow choreographer-turned director Farah Khan, another choreographer, Remo D'Souza, tried his hands at directing. The film's main claim to fame – the hit wrap number Char Baj Gaye lekin Party abhi baaki hai. Despite the absence of big stars, the film was successful and Remo's direction was well received.
    BO fate: A surprise hit. Producer Vashu Bhagnani also made money by selling the satellite rights for R 12 crores.
    Next Step: Remo's planning one more film for Bhagnani, with of course, Jackky Bhagnani in the lead.
  • Pankaj Kapur, Mausam: Considering his reputation as an actor, everyone awaited with bated breath for Pankaj Kapur's directorial debut. Billed as a romance saga spanning five continents and about eight years, the film took the biggest opening for a Shahid Kapoor starrer. But somehow Pankaj's magic failed in his directorial debut.

  • Amol Gupte, Stanley Ka Dabba: Amol won fans with his portrayal of Bhope Bhau in Vishal Bhardwaj's Kaminey and he repeated it again with his directorial debut Stanley Ka Dabba, featuring his son Partho in the lead. The film won awards in India and abroad.
