2010: Southern Flashback

The audio launch of Tamil movie Ilaignan in December turned out to be a grand affair with superstar Rajinikanth, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, Deputy CM M K Stalin, actress Khushboo, Namitha and other stars in attendance. Ilaignan is based on a novel written by Karunanidhi who also multitasks as screenplay and dialogue writer.

  • 2010 has been an action-packed year for southern film industry. Here's a look at the events which hogged the limelight.

  • Telugu hearthrob Allu Arjun got engaged to Hyderabad girl Sneha Reddy at a private ceremony in November attended by family, including superstar uncle Chiranjeevi.
  • Southern superstar Saravanan "Suriya" Sivakumar debuted in Bollywood with Ram Gopal Varma's Rakta Charitra. The film made no dent in the box office but Suriya's stint in Mumbai may have just begun.
  • The South Scope Awards 2010 were presented in September to the film fraternity of all the four southern languages at a colourful function in Hyderabad. The star attractions at the awards were actress Nayanthara and Prabhu Deva.
  • Well-known actor Bala married Idea Star Singer Amrita Suresh at Thiruvanmiyur Siva Temple in August. Filmstars and politicians turned out for the wedding.
  • In September, actor, director and choreographer Prabhu Deva admitted that he and actress Nayanthara are a couple. After being in the news for two years, Prabhu Deva said that they will be getting married soon.
  • Veteran filmmaker Daggubati Ramanaidu was given the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in October. Ramanaidu has produced more than 110 films in almost all Indian languages.
  • Tamil actor Murali died unexpectedly of a massive heart attack aged 46 in September leaving a shocked industry in his wake. Superstar Rajinikanth was among those who paid their condolences to the family of the late actor.
  • Noted lyricist Vairamuthu's second son Kabilan's wedding in September was a star studded affair. In attendance were superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, Oscar winning composer A R Rahman and political heavyweights M Karunanidhi and P Chidambaram.
  • Earlier this year in April southern actresss Rambha tied the knot with Canadian NRI businessman Indiran. Their reception in Chennai was attended by the who's who of the South Indian film industry as well as Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
  • Kim Sharma has little to cheer her in Bollywood but she stole the show in Telugu thriller Yagam
  • Bollywooder Deepika Padukone returned to her South Indian roots in Telugu film Kantri Mogudu, a dubbed version of Kannada film Aishwarya. Aishwarya was Deepika Padukone's Kannada debut, co-starring actor Upendra.
  • The Rajinikanth factor set the cash registers ringing with his double role bonanza in science fiction love story Endhiran. The record breaking blockbuster also featured Aishwarya Rai as an additional filmi treat.
  • Chiranjeevi Jr, Ram Charan Teja, proved himself a chip off the old block in blockbuster Telugu rom-com Orange. Also starring – Genelia D'Souza.
  • Popular Malayalam actress Kavya Madhavan filed for divorce from her husband of a year, Kuwait based software engineer Nischal Chandran. The separation was accompanied by rumours of smutty pictures of the actress and an out of court settlement between the families involved.

  • Rajinikanth's younger daughter, Soundarya, married Ashwin Kumar in the biggest, fattest wedding ever in September. A galaxy of stars showed up to wish the happy couple, among them Aishwarya and Abhishek, Kamal Haasan, Prabhu Deva Chiranjeevi and Sridevi.
  • The stars were out at the audio launch of Tamil movie Manmadhan Ambu. Kamal Haasan, Trisha, Madhavan, Director K S Ravikumar, Sangeetha, producer Udhaynidhi Stalin, Gouthami and Ramesh Aravind made it an evening to remember in Singapore.
  • In October, the Kerala High Court stayed the 57th National Film Award for Malayalam children's film Kesu directed by veteran director Sivan, father of film personalities Santosh, Sangeeth and Sanjeev. The stay was granted in connection with a petition filed by film maker Majid Gulistan whose children's film Chithrakuzhal was rejected by the regional jury.
  • After winning accolades at the 67th Venice International Film Festival recently, Mani Ratnam's Raavanan was screened at Pusan Film Fest in October. Southern superstar Vikram and Bollywood beauty Aishwarya led the all-star cast of the movie that was also made simultaneously in Hindi.
  • In October, veteran Telugu film personality and former Union Minister Dasari Narayana Rao was adjudged the best actor for 2009 in the Andhra Pradesh government's annual Nandi film awards. Narayana Rao, who directed about 150 films in a career spanning several decades, got the Best Actor award for his performance in the film Mestry.
  • Producer B K Krishnan is set to cash in on the Salman Khan appeal down South by making a movie based on the superstar's celluloid-worthy life. The film is tentatively titled Anna Salman or Brother Salman, but the producer is yet to zero in on an actor to play Salman.
  • Malayalam director Shaji N Karun's film Kutty Srank, starring Mammootty, won the National Award for Best Film in September after being rejected at the State Film Awards.
  • Chiranjeevi's younger brother Pawan Kalyan starred in much-awaited film, Komaram Puli. The film was released on 10th September in over 1,000 screens, a record in the Telugu industry.
  • Film star turned politician Chiranjeevi dropped hints that he would make a return to the movies to act in his 150th film – possibly produced by son Ram Charan Teja.
  • National award winning South Indian actor Prakash Raj married girlfriend, choreographer Pony Verma in August at a private ceremony held in Mumbai. The marriage was attended by the family members and close friends of the couple. Rani Mukherjee, Govinda and Tabu were among the guests at their reception.
  • Superstar Kamal Haasan returned to Malayalam film after almost 23 years with a guest role in Saji Surendran's Four Friends. The movie was released in October.
  • South Indian superstar Suriya's Singam was the first Tamil film to be released on a unprecedented scale across USA. The movie hit more than 30 screens in 24 cities in June.
  • Southern siren Asin added another feather to her cap - the Ghajini girl won the title of "Youth Icon of Kerala"- following a public voting poll that was conducted over a period of 15 days.
  • Kannada film Maleyali Jotheyali star Ganesh has a huge fan following in the US and it came as no surprise when its overseas release gathered huge profits.
