Troubled singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse was found dead at her residence in London on Saturday evening. An overdose of drugs is being investigated as the cause of her death.

The Rehab hitmaker--who had a history of drug addiction and heavy drinking--was discovered at her north London home by emergency services.

Her death is currently being treated as "unexplained".

A statement said: "Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased.

"On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained."

Amy won widespread acclaim with her 2003 debut album, Frank, but it was 2006's Back to Black which brought her worldwide stardom, winning five Grammy Awards.

However, she had a high-profile battle with drink and drugs and had several stints in rehab, including one last month.

She also had a troubled marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil, who she divorced in summer 2009 after two years.

Winehouse had been working on her long-awaited new album for the past three years and spent a stint in St Lucia in 2009 working on new material.

Fears had been growing for Winehouse following her disastrous appearance in Belgrade last month. She started her 12-leg European tour in Belgrade but was booed off the stage after appearing to forget her lyrics.

She then pulled out of performances in Istanbul and Athens before she cancelled the tour.

A statement released by the troubled singer's spokesperson said that she would be given "as long as it takes" to recover. "Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as it takes for this to happen."
However, the recovery never happened and the award-winning singer's life ended tragically in death which so far remains “unexplained”.
