National award winning actor and son-in -law of Tamil superstar Rajinikanth turns a year older, we take a look at his eventful journey to stardom.

  • Tamil superstar Rajinikanth's eldest daughter Aishwarya Dhanush is all set to don the director's hat for the first time. She will be directing husband Dhanush in an yet-untitled film.

Dhanush, who turned 28 on July 28, tweeted: "Thank u all 4 wishin me :) started Aishwarya's project today :) and birthday annaikki sabaraimalaikki mala potrukken :) divine. God bless."
  • Aishwarya has assisted brother-in-law and director Selvaraghavan earlier in Aayirathil Oruvan. They launched Production Five on July 28 along with Selvaraghavan who will be writing the script for the new film.
  • It's been a year of some worry and some joy for National Award winning actor and son-in-law of Kollywood's first family, Dhanush.

Dhanush won the prestigious Best Actor at the National Awards in May for his performance in Aadukalam, bringing much-needed joy to the family of Tamil superstar Rajinikanth.

Dhanush is married to the Thalaivar's eldest daughter, Aishwarya. Rajinikanth was hospitalised in recent months, first in Chennai and then in Singapore. His family has been battling his ill-health and the rumours over the fate of his new film, Rana.
  • On Twitter, Dhanush inadvertently advanced his birthday, tweeting on Tuesday (July 26): “"Tom I turn 28! I used to get so excited about my birthdays when I was younger. Now it's just another day. From boyhood to manhood. :) God Bless."

Hours later, Dhanush acknowledged his booboo, tweeting: Good god !! My bad ! Day after I turn 28 !! Lol. Don even know what day or date !! Bad bad. God bless.”
  • Born to noted director Kasthuri Raja, Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuri Raja is better known by the stage name Dhanush. He made his debut with Thulluvadho Ilamai in 2002. Dhanush's debut film was well-received but his breakthrough film was scripted by his director-brother Selvaraghavan. It was Selvaraghavan's debut directorial venture Kadhal Kondein in 2003 that marked Dhanush's entry into the A-list of actors in Kollywood.
  • Dhanush's next film Thiruda Thirudialso released in 2003 and became a blockbuster. The song Manmadha Rasa earned cult status.
  • But all was not well post his three big releases as successive flops followed with duds like Pudhukottaiyilirundhu Saravanan, Sullan and his most criticized film to date, Dreams.
  • In 2005, Dhanush made a comeback of sorts with two average flicks, Devathaiyai Kanden and Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam.
  • It was brother Selvaraghavan to the rescue again with the 2006 flickPudhupettai which gained some fame for the then faltering actor.
  • A rom-com, Thiruvilayadal Arambam, opposite Shriya Saran was Dhanush's first commercial hit in three years, applauded by critics and the audience.
  • The year 2007 was a mixed one for Dhanush – his first release Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram, a remake of successful Kannada film Jogi, bombed at the box-office. However, his second release of the year, Polladhavan, opposite Divya Spandana, was a blockbuster.
  • The revival of box-office fortune continued for Dhanush in 2008 with Yaaradi Nee Mohini opposite Nayanthara, and directed once again by director-brother Selvaraghavan. Dhanush bagged the Entertainer of the Year at the Vijay Awards in 2008.
  • He later did a cameo in 2008, portraying himself in his father-in-law Rajnikanth's Kuselan.
  • The 2009 release Padikathavan was a huge hit and Dhanush was highly praised for his dance and action sequences. His two releases in 2010, Kutty and Uthama Puthiran, directed by Mithran Jawahar, were decent hits.
  • But it was Aadukalam in 2011 directed by Vetrimaran, which won him the National Award for Best Actor as the youngest actor to have won the award. The film bagged six awards at the 58th National Film Awards.
  • Dhanush's next few releases were nothing to write home about, though his recent release, Venghai, received mixed reviews.
  • Dhanush is now back to work with his brother and lucky charm, Selvaraghavan, on Irandam Ulagam. He tweeted recently: “Resumed selva s final schedule ! Tough level of acting ! Will do my best :) god bless.”
  • Married to Aishwarya Rajinikanth, elder daughter of superstar Rajinikanth, Dhanush is father to two sons, Yathra and Linga. Here's wishing the young actor a successful year ahead.
