Big fat Bollywood weddings of 2009

Year 2009 was the 'Wedding Year' for Bollywood. Many Bollywood divas from Amrita Arora to Ayesha Takia and Shilpa Shetty tied the knot this year. Here's a look.

First to walk the aisle in 2009 was actress Ayesha Takia.

Ayesha of Wanted fame tied the knot with her boyfriend Farhan Azmi on March 1, 2009. Farhan is the son of politician Abu Azmi, a Samajwadi Party leader. The couple had originally planned to marry in December 2008, but the wedding was delayed due to the Mumbai attacks.

Three days later, VJ-turned-actor Amrita Arora got married with her long time boyfriend Shakeel Ladak.

Prior to the wedding, sangeet and mehendi ceremonies were also held. Sangeet was hosted by Salman Khan's sister Alvira.

The wedding was a three-day affair, first Amrita and Shakeel exchanged wedding rings and vows in a church wedding.

Amrita's best friend Kareena Kapoor and sister Malaika Arora Khan turned bridesmaid.

The actress, whose sister Malaika is married to Arbaaz Khan, hosted a gala reception for her friends from the industry. The who's who of Bollywood including Kareena, Saif, Sanjay with wife Manyata were all present at the event.

The biggest surprises of all was when Shilpa Shetty decided to get married. She got engaged to her NRI beau Raj Kundra in a very private ceremony at his residence on October 24, 2009. The actress wore a pink Manish Malhotra saree with custom made jewellery.

According to reports Raj had popped up the question to Shilpa on Diwali. The only person missing from the engagement was her younger sister Shamita Shetty, who was in the Bigg Boss house.

Media was abuzz with reports that Shilpa, who was busy with her movies, endorsements and business, would opt for a summer wedding in 2010 but the actress had other plans and disclosed her wedding date on her blog.

The sangeet and mehendi ceremonies prior to the wedding were held in Khandala.

Shilpa and her millionaire fiance Raj Kundra finally got married in a private ceremony in Khandala on November 22, 2009. The wedding venue was Shilpa's friend-cum-business partner Kiran Bawa's bungalow.

Raj came on a chariot and he was clad in a maroon sherwani with golden embroidery and was sporting a turban with his face veiled by a sehra. He was also holding a sword in his hand, as per Indian tradition.

Shilpa's sister Shamita Shetty along with her parents were there to receive Raj in a traditional Indian way.

The guest list was restricted to family members and close friends of the couple. The marriage ceremony was a mix of Punjabi and South Indian rituals.

Designer Tarun Tahiliani designed the 34-year-old bride's wedding costume.

Bollywood was present in full force at Shilpa's reception. Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan walked in with bahu Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, SRK with wife Gauri, Hrithik-Suzanne and others.

Bollywood's Khallas girl Isha Koppikar got married in a simple ceremony to her restauraunter boyfriend Timmy Narang on November 29, 2009.

Isha got married at the ISKCON Temple in Juhu in traditional Maharashtrian style.

Later in the evening the couple hosted a reception at the Narang House which was attended by friends from Bollywood.

Character actress Upasana Singh also tied the knot this year.

Supermodel Jesse Randhawa recently tied the knot with choreographer Sandip Soparkkar. The couple, who had been together for over five years, got married at the ISKCON temple in Mumbai.
