Blue, yellow, red: Fashion trends at the Emmys

We tell you the top style trends on the Emmy Awards 2012 red carpet.

  • Into the blue: Shades of blue ruled the red carpet at Emmy Awards this year. Sofia Vergara's sexy figure-hugging gown by Zuhair Murad and the dash of blue on Nicole Kidman's Antonio Berardi gown get a thumbs up from us.

Heidi Klum and Julianne Hough both walked the red carpet in similar shades of blue.
  • More ladies sing the blues: Zooey Deschanel abandoned her usual edgy style for a frothy Reem Acra confection. Jane Levy, Lara Spencer and Maria Menounos opted for darker shades of blue.
  • And more...: Yes, blue was the colour of the gala evening. Hayden Panettiere looks elegant, though a touch too grown up for 23, in a blue Marchesa gown. British actresses Michelle Dockery and Archie Punjabi both look great in blue satin gowns.
  • Paint the town yellow: Yellow was the second favourite colour on the Emmys red carpet. The three ladies - Claire Danes in Lanvin, Julianne Moore in Dior and Julie Bowen in Monique Lhuillier - who walked away with Emmy trophies, looked bright and beautiful in their sunshine-y gowns. We didn't quite like Hannah Simone's look, but Kelli Garner was a winner all the way. The usually lovely Leslie Mann looked just a little bit frumpy in Naeem Khan.
  • Give me red: Ladies in red Ginnifer Goodwin, Gretchen Mol, Anna Gunn, Cat Deeley and Nancy O'Dell matched themselves to the red carpet in style.
  • (G)O for Orange: Padma Lakshmi and Lindsay Pulsipher inject a shot of Vitamin C into proceedings – and a little bit of Indian flavour. Model and TV chef Padma Lakshmi, in Monique Lhuillier, is of Indian origin, and actress Lindsay Pulsipher's dress is by Indian designer Bibhu Mohapatra.
  • Purple rain: Kelly Osbourne picked a dress to match her lavender hair and while that might be a bit over the top for us, we have no complaints about the lilac Zac Posen. Ashley Judd's Carolina Herrera was easily overshadowed by her towering beehive. Both Tina Fey and Carrie Ann Inaba looked chic.
  • Fine wine: Claret and burgundy dresses were shown off to their best advantage by Seinfeld's Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Two Broke Girls'Kat Dennings, The Big Bang Theory's Mayim Bialik and Law And Order actress Jena Malone.
  • Winsome white: White highlights punctuated a red carpet awash with colour this year. Mad Men star Jessica Pare looked like a vintage beauty in a white Jason Wu gown. Emilia Clarke, 12 year old Kiernan Shipka and Bridesmaids' funny girl Kristen Wiig also flew white flags.
  • Black magic: You can never go wrong in black they say. But on the red carpet it was just January Jones, in red carpet favourite Zac Posen, who managed to make heads turn in a black gown. Kathy Griffin, Lena Headey and Melissa McCarthy couldn't compete.
  • Heavy metal: Nicole Kidman, Lucy Liu in Versace, Sofia Vergara and Jane Krakowski shimmered their way onto the red carpet in metallic marvels.
  • Fun with florals: We love floral prints and so do the ladies - Elisabeth Moss in Dolce & Gabbana, Kenley Collins and Julianna Margulies in Giambattista Valli are blooming lovely.
  • Read my lips: While a sea of colourful dresses formed a veritable rainbow at the Emmys, there was one favourite colour on almost everyone's lips. Fire engine red was the lipstick shade of choice.
