Indian tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain was anounced as part of the winning team behind the Global Drum Project - nominated under the Best Contemporary World Music Album category, at Grammy Awards 2009.
Zakir Hussain teamed up with Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, Nigerian percussionist Sikiru Adepoju and Puerto Rican jazz percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo for the Global Drum Project.
Global Drum Project is the second collaboration between Hart and Hussain after their compilation Planet Drum which was released in 1991 and went on to win their first-ever Grammy Award in the World Music category.
Talking about his award, the tabla maestro said that he was very excited for his achievement because it was a competition with the great musicians of contemporary world music.
On being asked if he would have felt more satisfactory, had it been a win for a purely Indian project, Zakir Hussain said that though his album was a collaborative attempt, he would be happier if an independent Indian album bags a Grammy in future.
