Ayushmann made his debut in Bollywood in 2012 when he featured in Shoojit Sircar's film Vicky Donor, opposite Yami Gautam. Based on the concept of sperm donation, Vicky Donor was produced by John Abraham. He also made his singing debut with Paani Da Rang, a song from the same film. Paani Da Rang became an instant hit.

After Vicky Donor, Ayushmann featured in Rohan Sippy's film Nautanki Saala! in 2013. The film also featured Kunaal Roy Kapur, Evelyn Sharma, Pooja Salvi and Gaelyn Mendonca. It was inspired by a French romantic comedy Apres Vous. Ayushmann yet again impressed his audience with his voice as he sung two songs, Saddi Gali and Tu Hi Tu for the film.

However, 2015 did not start on a good note for Ayushmann as Hawaizaada did not quite light up the box office. Co-starring Besharam actress Pallavi Sharda and Mithun Chakraborty. Hawaizaada, was a period film based on Indian scientist Shivkar Talpade, who is credited with building the first unmanned plane.

Ayushmann avoided 2016 but returned with a bang in 2017. His first film of the year - Meri Pyaar Bindu with Parineeti Chopra - failed to create a box office stir but film #2 and #3 of 2017 were critically acclaimed and performed well at the box office too. In Bareilly Ki Barfi, Ayushmann co-starred with Kriti Sanon and Rajkummar Rao while Shubh Mangal Saavdhan reunited him with his Dum Laga Ke Haisha co-star Bhumi Pednekar.

In 2018, he featured in Sriram Raghvan's AndhaDhun, in which the actor played the role of a visually-challenged concert pianist. He even received a National Film Award for the Best Actor for his performance in the film. He also starred in Badhaai Ho the same year, which also emerged as a hit.
