Christina later claimed that her father was emotionally and physically abusive. She even sang about it in "I'm OK" on Stripped, and "Oh Mother" on Back to Basics.
"The little girl with the big voice", Christina was a shining star even as a child. She lost the top spot on Star Search, and was picked on at school following her television appearances.
At 14, Christina recorded her first song, "All I Wanna Do", a hit duet with Japanese singer Keizo Nakanishi. Later in 1997, she represented the US at the international Golden Stag Festival with a two-song set.
Eponymous album, Christina Aguilera, reached the top of the Billboard 200 and also made it to the Top 100 Albums of All Time list of The Recording Industry Association of America.
Her singles "Genie in a Bottle", "What a Girl Wants" and “Come on Over Baby” topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1999 and 2000, and "I Turn to You" reached number three.
She also released a Christmas album the same year called My Kind of Christmas. It peaked at number twenty-eight on the Billboard 200, and got platinum status in the US.
Christina was rumored to have dated MTV VJ Carson Daly, fuelled by Eminem's song, "The Real Slim Shady'. The rappers crude remarks about Christina angered her, but the two patched up later at the Video Music Awards.
Puerto Rican dancer Jorge Santos romanced her for nearly two years, during which he appeared on her tour and music videos. They broke up in September 2001.
Tired of her bubblegum pop image, Christina shed her inhibitions and her clothes with Stripped in 2002. A collection of tattoos and piercings completed the transformation to XTina.
Dying her hair cherry blonde was XTina's route to a makeover from crass to class. Later, she cropped her hair Marilyn Monroe style, channeling old Hollywood glamour.
XTina began dating music marketing executive Jordan Bratman in 2002, finally giving up her wild child lifestyle for domestic bliss in a lavish 2005 Napa Valley wedding.
Her third English studio album, Back to Basics was released in 2006 and debuted successfully. A throwback to the old times, it received raving positive reviews but was criticized for being too long.
In 2008, she gave birth to son Max, and was reportedly paid $1.5 million by People magazine for her baby pictures, placing her fifth on the list of the most expensive celebrity baby photos by Forbes.
In October, the singer separated from husband of five years, citing irreconcilable differences. She maintained that they were better off as friends and that son remained their top priority.
