Kangana was born in Himachal Pradesh and attended school in Dehradun. She moved to Delhi when she was in college and joined a modelling agency. She then joined a theatre group and acted in several plays.

Kangana made her debut in Bollywood with Gangster in 2006, co-starring Emraan Hashmi and Shiney Ahuja. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut for the movie.

Thereafter, she featured in Woh Lamhe, which was reportedly based on Parveen Babi's life. Kangana played the protagonist in the movie, which also starred Shiney Ahuja.

Kangana's performance in Anurag Basu's Life In A Metro (2007) earned her rave reviews.

In 2008, came Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion, also starring Priyanka Chopra and Mugdha Godse. Kangana played a supermodel battling addiction. Her performance won her the National Award for Best Supporting Actress.

After delivering a couple of box office duds, Kangana co-starred with Ajay Devgn in Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai in 2010.

2011 started on a good note for Kangana as her movie Tanu Weds Manu, co-starring R Madhavan, did fairly well at the box office. The movie was a respite from the dark roles she had been cast in till then. Her performance in the movie was applauded.

But her other releases that year namely Game, Double Dhamaal and Rascals failed at the box office.

In 2012, Kangana had just one release - Tezz - and that too didn't impress the audience at all.

In 2013, Kangana was seen in the romantic musical Rajjo, depicting the journey of a nautch girl in the most extraordinary circumstances. The movie failed at the box office, but Kangana's performance was singled out for praise.

Later that year, Kangana played a mutant opposite Hrithik Roshan in Krrish 3, which was a blockbuster hit.

2014 started with much fanfare for the actress with Queen endearing itself to critics and audiences alike.

Kangana was also seen in director Sai Kabir's dark comedy Revolver Rani but the film failed at the box office.

She starred opposite Emraan Hashmi in Ungli, a film about a group of people fighting corruption, but it did average business at the box office.

In 2015, Kangana played a double role in Tanu Weds Manu Returns, the sequel to her 2011 film Tanu Weds Manu opposite R Madhavan. The film performed really well at the box office. Yet again, she won the National Award - this time, for Best Actress.

However, Kangana's other film Katti Batti, co-starring Imran Khan, tanked at the box office.

In 2017, she featured in Vishal Bhardwaj's Rangoon with Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan. The film failed to leave a mark at the box office despite receiving rave reviews.

Kangana also starred in the much-awaited heist drama Simran, in which she played an obsessive gambler and a bank robber. Simran opened to mixed reviews but failed to leave a mark at the box office.

Kangana Ranaut's Manikarnika-The Queen of Jhansi, a biopic on Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi, released in January this year and received mixed reviews.

On Kangana Ranaut's birthday, it was also announced that the actress has been roped in to play the role of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in biopic titled Thalaiva. The film will be directed by AL Vijay and is all set to go on floors in April. The Hindi version of the biopic will be titled Jaya.
