Samantha Ruth Prabhu was born on April 28, 1987 to a Malayali mother and a Telugu father. She was brought up in Chennai and is the youngest child of the family. She completed her bachelor's degree in commerce at Stella Maris College, Chennai. During her under graduation, she started modelling.

In 2016, Samantha married her longtime boyfriend Naga Chaitanya. They first met while filming Ye Maaya Chesave and fell in love. They married as per Christian rituals and in a tradition south Indian ceremony in Goa. .

Samantha debuted with Gautham Menon's Telugu film, Ye Maaya Chesave in 2010, in which, she was paired opposite Naga Chaitanya. Her role was critically-acclaimed and the film was hit at the box office.

Later in the year, she starred in two Tamil films - Baana Kaathadi, opposite Adharvaa, and Ravi Varman's Moscowin Kavery.

2012 proved to be a good year for Samantha. Her Telugu film, Dookudu, opposite superstar Mahesh Babu, became one of the most successful films of all time. In the same year, she starred in S S Rajamouli's Eega. The film was made in Tamil and Telugu.

Samantha won her first ever Filmfare Best Actress Awards for Gautham Menon's Tamil romantic drama Neethane En Ponvasantham and Eega in 2012.

Next year, the actress featured again with Mahesh Babu in Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu . Venkatesh also co-starred with Samantha and Mahesh Babu in the film. The romantic comedy, Jabardasth, opposite Pawan Kalyan also released in the same year. Despite an impressive star cast, the film tanked at the box office. Samantha and Pawan Kalyan's next film, Attarintiki Daredi, a family drama, emerged as the highest-grossing Telugu film upon release. Ramayya Vasthavayya was her last release of the year, where she had a small role.

In 2014's Manam, she featured with several members of the Akkineni film family. She won Critics' Best Actress at the SIIMA Award or her role. Later, she featured opposite Naga Chaitanya in Autonagar Surya.

Linguswamy's gangster drama, Anjaan, opposite Suriya, was poorly received at the box office. However, AR Murugadoss' Kaththi, opposite Vijay, proved to be the most profitable Tamil films of 2014.

Samantha was praised for her performance in Thanga Magan, where she featured opposite Dhanush.

In 2016, Samantha featured in six films, including Janatha Garage, Theri, Brahmotsavam and A Aa, for which she won Best Actress Filmfare (Telugu) Award.

Next she was seen in Rangasthalam, Mahanati, Irumbu Thirai and Seema Raja - all films performed well at the ticket window.

This year she was seen in Majili with Naga Chitanya. This was their first film together after their wedding. Majili performed reasonably well at the box office.
