Sonam is the eldest daughter of actor Anil Kapoor and jewellery designer Sunita. She is the grand-daughter of filmmaker Surinder Kapoor.
Sonam's uncles are also in the film industry - Boney Kapoor is a famous producer while Sanjay Kapoor was an actor. Boney is now married to famous actress Sridevi. -
Sonam has one sister, Rhea, and a brother, Harshvardhan. Rhea made her Bollywood debut as a producer with Aisha and she frequently acts as Sonam's stylist. Sonam's cousins include Boney Kapoor's son and daughter with first wife Mona - actor Arjun and Anshula - and his daughters with Sridevi - Jhanvi and Khushi.

Sonam went to Arya Vidya Mandir school in Juhu and then to the United World College of South East Asia for her International Baccalaureate. Then she studied Political Science and Economics at University of East London.

Before making her big Bollywood debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya opposite Ranbir Kapoor in 2007, she worked as an assistant director for the filmmaker in Black (2005).

Sonam and Ranbir put in fair performances in Saawariya but the film proved to be a major disaster at the box office, except its hit soundtrack.

Then came Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra's Delhi 6, which featured the hit song Masakalli. The film was another dud in her short career though Sonam's performance was praised.

Next came Punit Malhotra's I Hate Luv Stories, (2010) in which she starred opposite Imran Khan. The movie was a success at the box office.

She was seen in her Anil Kapoor's production Aisha (2010) which was a film adaptation of Jane Austen's Emmaand and then in Thank You. Both the films failed to make a mark at the box office.

She was also seen romancing Shahid Kapoor in Mausam (2011), directed by Shahid's father Pankaj Kapur.

In 2012, Sonam featured in Abbas Mustan's Players opposite Abhishek Bachchan. The film was the Hindi remake of The Italian Job and it made news more for Sonam flipping the bird than the actual content.

2013 was finally Sonam's year and she received critical acclaim for her performance in the romantic drama Raanjhanaa and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. She was nominated for best actress at several film awards for her role in Raanjhanaa.

Sonam's first release of 2014 was Bewakoofiyaan, opposite Ayushmann Khurrana and Rishi Kapoor. The film received a lukewarm response at the box office.

Khubsoorat, a remake of the 1980 movie of the same name, featured her opposite Pakistani heartthrob Fawad Khan and did brisk business.

2015 saw Sonam as a con bride in the Arbaaz Khan-produced Dolly Ki Doli. Though the film didn't do too well commercially, Sonam's performance was well received.

Sonam lit up the screens with Sooraj Barjatya's Diwali release Prem Ratan Dhan Payo opposite Salman Khan.

She followed up Prem Ratan Dhan Payo's success with her stupendous performance in Neerja, directed by Ram Madhvani.

Neerja fetched Sonam a National Award. She received a Special Mention for the film.

Sonam Kapoor's next film was 2018's PadMan, in which she co-starred with Akshay Kumar. Directed by R Balki, Sonam played the role of an enthusiastic social worker in the film.

Next, Sonam co-starred with an ensemble cast - Kareena Kapoor, Swara Bhasker, Shikha Talsania - in Veere Di Wedding, which was co-produced by her sister Rhea Kapoor.

The same year, Sonam also co-starred with Ranbir Kapoor in Sanju, the Sanjay Dutt biopic. She played the role of Ruby, a character which represented Sanjay Dutt's romantic relations on screen.

2018 was a big year for Sonam Kapoor as in May, ahead of the release of Veere Di Wedding, she had her very own big fat shaadi and married Anand Ahuja on May 8. Sonam's wedding festivities echoed through Mumbai for days!

Sonam began 2019 with Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, in which she played a gay character and also co-starred with dad Anil Kapoor.

2019's The Zoya Factor remains Sonam Kapoor's last film so far. In the movie, Sonam portrayed the role of a lively advertising executive, who fell in love with a top cricketer, played by Dulquer Salmaan.
