Sushant Singh Rajput was born in 1986 in Patna, Bihar. It was after Sushant's mother's death in 2002 that he moved from Patna to Delhi. He attended St. Karens High School in Patna and Kulachi Hansraj Model School in New Delhi. He was pursuing his bachelors from Delhi Technological University. However, Sushant dropped out in the third year to pursue his dream of becoming an actor.

While studying in Delhi Technological University, Sushant Singh Rajput had enrolled in Shiamak Davar's dance and his interest in acting came much later. He soon became a part of Shiamak Davar's standard dance troupe and was chosen to be a part of one of the group's background dancer. He later moved to Mumbai and joined Nadira Babbar's Ekjute theater group.

In 2008, he made his first screen debut in Ekta Kapoor's Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil.

In 2009, he bagged another key role in Ekta Kapoor's Pavitra Rishta, which played an important role in shaping his career. He played the role of Manav Deshmukh in serial which also featured Ankita Lokhande. He quit Pavitra Rishta in 2010.

Sushant Singh Rajput auditioned for Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che! and bagged the role of one of three main leads in the film. The film was based on Chetan Bhagat's novel The Thee Mistakes Of My Life, also starring Rajkummar Rao, Amit Sadh and Amrita Puri. He received a Filmfare for Best Debut Actor category for his performance in the film.

Sushant Singh Rajput's second film Shuddh Desi Romance released in 2013. Starring Parineeti Chopra and Vaani Kapoor, the film failed to make an impact at the box office.
