Taapsee was born in Delhi in a Sikh family. Taapsee, who is a Computer Science graduate, completed her schooling and college from Delhi. Taapsee entered the film industry after she featured on the reality show Get Gorgeous.

Taapsee, who was offered three films even before her debut hit the screens, appeared in seven films in 2011 in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. She made Aadukalam with Dhanush (her Tamil film debut), Vastadu Naa Raju with Vishnu Manchu, Mr Perfect with Prabhas, Veera with Ravi Teja, Vandhaan Vendraan with Jiiva, Mogudu with Gopichand and Doubles with Mammootty. In 2016, she won over the film industry with her powerful performance in the Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury-directed Pink. The film also featured Amitabh Bachchan, Kirti Kulhari and Andrea Tariang. Pink won the National Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues.
