Joy Mukherjee was born on February 24, 1939 to producer and co-founder of Filmalaya Studios Sashadhar Mukherjee and Sati Devi.

His mother, Sati Devi, was the sister of actors Ashok, Kishore and Anoop Kumar.

He has two brothers Deb Mukherjee and (late) Shomu Mukherjee. Shomu was married to actress Tanuja and their daughters are actresses Kajol and Tanisha.

His niece and nephew are Rani Mukerji and director Ayan Mukerji.

Joy Mukherjee made his acting debut in 1960 with Love In Simla opposite Sadhana.

After Love in Simla, he worked with established star Asha Parekh and delivered several hits like Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon, Love in Tokyo and Ziddi.

But in the late 60s Mr Mukherjee's boyish charm was overshadowed by upcoming stars such as Dharmendra, Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna.

He then, took to direction and made Humsaaya but the movie failed at the box office and his subsequent films also failed miserably.

Success finally arrived with home production Ek Baar Muskura Do in 1972 starring brother Deb Mukherjee and Tanuja. But post that Joy Mukherjee took a backseat and eventually all but vanished from the silver screen with occasional films like Chailla Babu (1977) starring Zeenat Aman and Rajesh Khanna.

In 2009 he worked in the television serial Aye Dil-e-Nadan.
