Serial bachelor George Clooney's engagement to British lawyer Amal Alamuddin was met with the sound of many hearts shattering and many jaws hitting the floor.

Who is Amal Alamuddin anyway, asked fans. Lebanon-born Amal is an advocate for human rights and has represented, among other international personalities, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

Born in Beirut, Amal now lives and works in London and is legal advisor to the King of Bahrain.

While fans and Hollywood insiders profess themselves shocked, many forget that George Clooney was once married to Mad Men actress Talia Balsam. Their elaborate Las Vegas wedding in 1989 lasted four years before they divorced in 1993 after which the Ocean's Eleven star swore off marriage forever.

Right after his divorce, the actor was seen in the arms of actress Kimberly Russell who he met on the sets of a commercial and dated till 1995 when his reluctance to commit broke them up.

Around 2000, he was rumoured to be dating Charlie's Angels star Lucy Liu. They were seen together again in 2006.
