Mithunda, Disco Dancer, is 67 Today

Mithun Chakraborty is 67 today. And he's not slowing down. The original Disco Dancer will be back with yet another exciting episode of Dance India Dance Super Moms and will be seen in the upcoming Bollywood action-thriller Enemmy. These days, he has been busy promoting his film with his son Mahaakshay Chakraborty. Here's a pictorial journey through Mithunda's life and career as he turns a year older.

  • Gouranga Chakraborty was born on June 16, 1947 in Bangladesh. He went to school in Kolkata's Oriental Seminary and then graduated from Scottish Church College. He also holds a professional degree from Film and Television Institute of India.
  • The young Gouranga was a fervent Naxalite but took an exit route from the group soon after his brother was killed in an accident. He holds a black belt in martial arts, which stood him in good stead when shooting fight sequences.
  • Mithun Chakraborty married young actress Yogeeta Bali in 1979 and they have four children - Mahakshay, Rimoh, Namashi and Dishani. His eldest son Mahaakshay is also an actor.
  • Under the stage name of Mithun Chakraborty, he made his debut in 1976 in Bengali director Mrinal Sen's Mrigaya and holds the rare honour of having won the National Award for Best Actor for his debut performance.
  • At the same time, Mithunda was eying Bollywood. He made a special appearance in 1976's Do Anjaane, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha. His first starring role in a Hindi film was in 1977's Mukti and soon he delivered hit films such as Mera Rakshak in 1978 and Surakshaa in 1979.
  • Mithunda's most famous role came in 1982, when he played singer-dancer Anil/Jimmy in Disco Dancer. His dance routine combined with music director Bappi Lahiri's disco-era soundtrack made the film a rage in India and abroad. Mithun Chakraborty's name was on the lips of fans stretching from the Far East through Africa to the Middle East.
  • Now a superstar, Mithunday appeared in over 110 movies in the ‘80s. His hit-list includes movies like Shaukeen, Sun Sajna, Aamne Samne, Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye, Ghar Ek Mandir, Pyaar Jhukta Nahin, Swarag Se Sunder, Pyaar Ka Mandir, Jagir, Jaal, Dilwaala, Watan Ke Rakhwale and Waqt Ki Awaz. He was the highest-paid actor after Amitabh Bachchan and built a reputation as an action star as well as a dancer.
  • The ‘90s were no less fruitful, with Mithunda appearing in another 100 plus movies. These included Agneepath, Shandaar, Gunahon Ka Devta, Pyar Ka Devta,Trinetra and Mere Sajana Saath Nibhana.
  • The Bengali language Tahader Katha (1992), directed by Buddhadeb Dasgupta, fetched Mithun Chakrabaorty a second National Award.
  • Mithun Chakraborty received his third National Award in 1998, winning Best Supporting Actor for Swami Vivekananda.
  • Mithunda has also won two Filmfare awards - Best Supporting Actor in 1991 for Agneepath and Best Villain in 1996 for Jallad. He received the Lifetime Achievement prize at the Stardust Awards in 2007.
  • In the 2000s, Mithun Chakraborty delivered well-received performances in Bengali films such as Titli and Yuddho. He also appeared in acclaimed Hindi films like Mani Ratnam's Guru and Kalpana Lajmi's Chingaari.
  • Mithunda is also a businessman and owns The Monarch chain of hotels in Ooty, Darjeeling, Siliguri and Mudumalai. His film studio, Mithun's Dream Factory, operates out of Ooty - where he lives.
  • Along the way, Mithunda decided to focus on low budget movies, a strategy that paid rich dividends because it meant the actor was able to churn out movie after movie every week. These included Dalaal, Phool Aur Angaar, Ravan Raaj: A True Story and Shapath.
  • Mithunda's most recent films include Veer (2010), Golmaal 3 (2010), Housefull 2, OMG - Oh My God!, Khiladi 786, Boss (2013) and Kaanchi (2014).
  • He also appeared in his home production Enemmy, with eldest son Mahakshay, last year.
  • Mithun Chakraborty has also forged a successful TV career in recent times. He is the man behind talent show Dance India Dance, in which he appears as the Grandmaster. He also played the host of reality show Dadagiri Unlimited and is currently hosting the Bengali version of Bigg Boss.
  • In February this year, Mithun Chakraborty was nominated to the Rajya Sabha as a Member of Parliament for Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress.
  • He is currently shooting for It's Entertainment co-starring Akshay Kumar, Kick with Salman Khan and Hawaizaade with Ayushmann Khurrana.
