Aishwarya Rai might be India's most famous face at Cannes but she hasn't always been its best representative neck down. Here are three of her worst fashion choices – Abu-Sandeep, Abu-Sandeep and Neeta Lulla, in that order. She learnt to leave Neeta Lulla out of her wardrobe the hard way, receiving no end of criticism for outfits like the green sari with corset blouse in 2003. She wore the Abu-Sandeep sari with jacket in 2012 and the figure-swamping anarkali last year. Perhaps she'll have learnt enough to give them a wide berth this year.

Mallika Sherawat's eye-opening costumes have always been taken in the spirit with which they were worn. She appeared on the Croisette with a live snake, after all. It's when she gets serious about dressing up that we get serious about calling her out for fashion fails – this strange pale yellow dress, for example, and the unflattering, distinctly unsexy Dolce & Gabbana, both from last year.

A wardrobe of Sabyasachi does not always a well-dressed Vidya Balan make. Cannes wasn't the best time or place to experiment with a look that Vidya has nailed back home. She chose outfits that didn't flatter and ruined a perfectly simple sari look with school-marm styling.
