Shammi Kapoor: The final journey

With tears in their eyes and a prayer on their lips, Shammi Kapoor's family, friends and the industry bid farewell to the veteran actor at the Ban Ganga crematorium in South Mumbai at 11 am on Monday (August 15).

The film industry turned up in large numbers to pay their last respects to the actor who succumbed to kidney failure in the early hours of Sunday (August 14).

Shammi Kapoor's body was brought to the cremation ground around 10.30 am and the last rites were performed by his son, Aditya Raj Kapoor, who was wearing his father's beads around his neck.

A poignant tweet from Amitabh Bachchan summed up the mood of the industry: "Spent the entire day by the side of a man that was the picture of motion and exuberance .. now lying still among flowers and prayer!"

Apart from the extended Kapoor family, many Bollywood celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Prakash Jha, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ketan Desai, Satish Kaushik, Subhash Ghai, Jug Mundhra, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Yash Chopra, Nikhil Advani and Sudhir Mishra also came to the cremation ground.
