He was born on 9th December 1945 in Patna, Bihar. Bollywood was his ultimate dream since childhood.

After completed his education, he joined the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune to learn acting.

His first break was as a supporting role of Havaldar Tiwari in Manoj Kumar-Asha Parekh starrer Sajan in 1969.

His voice and way of dialogue delivery became his identity in the film industry.

In a couple of years of his debut in Bollywood, he did many films like Jalaal Mahmood Sayeed (1970), Nayeem Builder (1970), Raaton Ka Raja (1970), Khilona (1970), Holi Ayee Re (1970), Ek Nanhi Munni Ladki Thi (1970), Chetna (1970), Prem Pujari (1970), Mere Apne (1971), Paras (1971) and Parwana (1971).

His initial roles were either supporting one or as a villain. One of such films which established him as a villain was Raampur Ka Lakshman in 1972. In Randhir Kapoor and Rekha starrer movie, he played a leader of a gang involved in criminal activities.

He was at the peak of his career in 70s and 80s during which he did movies Jaggu (1975), Kalicharan (1976), Gautam Govinda (1979), Kaala Patthar (1979), Muqbala (1979), Dostana (1980), Naseeb (1981) and Kranti (1981) just to name a few. Kalicharan (1976) was his first film as a hero.

Amitabh Bachchan was his biggest rival in 70s. According to reports Shatru's fighting sequence with Amitabh Bachchan in Kaala Patthar (1979) was supposed to be one of the greatest fighting sequences of Bollywood films.

Rakha Charitra was one of Shatru's recent work in which he portrayed Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao. It is said that it was for the first time since his entry into Bollywood, he shaved off his moustache and donned a clean-shaven look for this role.

He was romantically involved with actress Reena Roy with whom he did many films. The love affair ended after he got married to Poonam Sinha. The couple is blessed with a daughter Sonakshi Sinha and twin sons Luv Sinha and Kush Sinha.
