The film's producer Karan Johar says that his film, directed by debutant Shakun Batra, is inspired by Hollywood director Woody Allen's style of filmmaking. "This is something new that Shakun is attempting here. He is a big fan of Woody Allen and brings with him a different grammar of filmmaking."

Imran Khan in a recent interview admitted that he was smitten by co-actress Kareena Kapoor's beauty and that he had a huge crush on the 31-year-old actress. "I could not articulate my feelings for her... I nursed a silent crush. When we started working together in this film we got along really well," Imran said.
