  • Bollywood's top fashionista, Sonam Kapoor had a Khubsoorat 2014 and seems set for an encore this year as well as well with film projects such as Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and the biopic on Neerja Bhanot under her belt. The actress also continued her impressive red carpet career at big ticket events such as the Cannes International Film Festival.

Here's a pictorial journey through her life and career as she turns a year older.
  • Sonam is the eldest daughter of actor Anil Kapoor and jewellery designer Sunita. She is the grand-daughter of filmmaker Surinder Kapoor.

Sonam's uncles are also in the film industry - Boney Kapoor is a famous producer while Sanjay Kapoor was an actor. Boney is now married to famous actress Sridevi.
  • Sonam has one sister, Rhea, and a brother, Harshvardhan. Rhea made her Bollywood debut as a producer with Aisha and she frequently acts as Sonam's stylist. Sonam's cousins include Boney Kapoor's son and daughter with first wife Mona - actor Arjun and Anshula - and his daughters with Sridevi - Jhanvi and Khushi.
  • Sonam went to Arya Vidya Mandir school in Juhu and then to the United World College of South East Asia for her International Baccalaureate. Then she studied Political Science and Economics at University of East London.
  • The actress, whose style is the talk of Bollywood and is looked up to by many young girls today, weighed 86 kilos before becoming an actress and she lost over 30 kilos after Sanjay Leela Bhansali signed her for Saawariya.
  • Before making her big Bollywood debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya opposite Ranbir Kapoor in 2007, she worked as an assistant director for the filmmaker in Black (2005).
  • Sonam and Ranbir put in fair performances in Saawariya but the film proved to be a major disaster at the box office, except its hit soundtrack.
  • Then came Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra's Delhi 6, which featured the hit song Masakalli. The film was another dud in her short career though Sonam's performance was praised.
  • Next came Punit Malhotra's I Hate Luv Storys, (2010) in which she starred opposite Imran Khan. The movie was a success at the box office.
  • She was seen in her home production Aisha (2010) which was a film adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma. Next came the comedy Thank You in 2011, which also failed to make a mark at the box office.
  • She was also seen romancing Shahid Kapoor in Mausam (2011), directed by Shahid's father Pankaj Kapur.
  • In 2012, Sonam featured in Abbas Mustan's Players opposite Abhishek Bachchan. The film was the Hindi remake of The Italian Job and it made news more for Sonam flipping the bird than the actual content.
  • 2013 was finally Sonam's year and she received critical acclaim for her performance in the romantic drama Raanjhanaa and the biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. She was nominated for best actress at several film awards for her role in Raanjhanaa.
  • Sonam's first release of 2014 was Bewakoofiyaan, opposite Ayushmann Khurrana and Rishi Kapoor. The film received a lukewarm response at the box office. Khubsoorat, a remake of the 1980 movie of the same name, featured her opposite Pakistani heartthrob Fawad Khan and did brisk business.
  • 2015 saw Sonam as a con bride in the Arbaaz Khan-produced Dolly Ki Doli. Though the film didn't do too well commercially, Sonam's performance was well received.
  • As famous for the clothes she wears as the roles she plays, Sonam made her fifth successful trip to the Cannes Film Festival this year as the brand ambassador of L'Oreal. She received mixed reviews for her look at the film festival this year.

Her opening ceremony outfit was cobalt Ralph & Russo. But it was her concluding dress - a giant feathered Elie Saab dress the colour of limes - that was instantly reviled on social media with comparisons to Sesame Street's Big Bird and her father Anil Kapoor's chest hair. The most spectacular of her outfits were those she wore off the red carpet - an Abu-Sandeep ivory sari she wore to meet the press and a black and gold art deco style dress by the same designers at the Chopard party.
  • Sonam will now light up the screens this Diwali in Sooraj Barjatya's Prem Ratan Dhan Payo in which she stars opposite Salman Khan. She is currently filming the biopic on Neerja Bhanot, which is ace photographer Atul Kasbekar's debut production. She has also reportedly been signed for the film adaptation of Anuja Chauhan's novel Battle For Bittora opposite Fawad Khan.
