Sonam Kapoor's blast from the past

Bollywood's style diva Sonam Kapoor seems to be in flashback mood today (October 22, 2011). She tweeted a picture of her third birthday celebrations (dated June 9, 1988), where little Sonam is seen blowing the candles amidst her family and friends.

Ahead, check out some snapshots of her journey from overweight star child to the clotheshorse of Bollywood.

The eldest of Anil Kapoor and Sunita Kapoor's three children (her younger siblings are Rhea and Harshvardhan) and distant relatives to the great Kapoor khaandaan of Bollywood .

With the connections she had, it was a matter of time before she made her big filmi debut. Her first brush with the industry came when she assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his critically acclaimed film Black, starring Amitabh Bachchan. Noticed on the sets, the director decided to cast her in his next Saawariya, opposite the other Bollywood beta Ranbir Kapoor.

Was it a smooth ride to Bollywood? Absolutely not! One of Bhansali's preconditions were that the then ‘chubby' child shed some pounds. Sonam Kapoor lost over 30 kgs for her big debut - a truly remarkable feat.

The 2007 Saawariya may have failed at the box-office, but it won Sonam a slew of best debut awards, along with her co-star Ranbir Kapoor.

Saawariya also led to her being cast opposite Abhishek Bachchan in Delhi-6. Again, the film failed to impress, yet critics appreciated Sonam's skills and overall screen package.

The year 2010 was a good year for Sonam. Her first box office hit, I Hate Luv Storys, opposite hottie Imran Khan, had the Sonam stock rising.

Her next Aisha didn't exactly rock the box office, but it firmly established Sonam's status as the czarina of fashion in Bollywood.

Jean Paul Gaultier couture to Roberto Cavalli and Atsu Sekhose, Sonam has seldom has she been criticized for her style. Fans love to follow her look and Sonam is creating her own style legacy.

She was among the Indian stars to walk the red carpet at the 64th Cannes Film Festival, as the face of L'Oreal, earlier this year. Despite the presence of other heavy-duty Cannes stalwarts like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam held her own and what's more, she wasn't afraid to experiment!

Sonam has tried her best to stay single. Yet there are plenty of rumours on link-ups. The latest is the link-up with IHLS director Punit Malhotra. The two have often been spotted partying all over Mumbai. It's about time Sonam finally ‘fessed up!

Not to worry, Sonam hasn't put all her eggs into one basket. She has hedged her bets with two more films that are scheduled to release this year - the Shahid Kapoor starrer Mausam and Abbas-Mustan's Players, once again with Abhishek Bachchan.
