One of the first playback singers of the Indian film industry, Shamshad Begum worked with some of the top music directors of the 1950s and 60s like Naushaad and OP Nayyar. Her soulful songs from the black and white era are still loved by music enthusiasts and have also been remixed a number of times for young party lovers. Today, on her 94th birthday, we bring to you our favourite top ten Shamshad Begum hits.

  • Legendary singer Shamshad Begum, one of the first playback singers in the Hindi film industry and voice behind hit songs like Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon, Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar and Kajra Mohabbat Wala, has died at her Mumbai residence. She was 94.

  • Leke pehla pehla pyar - CID (1956): This foot-tapping number from the crime-thriller movie was one of the many superhit songs from CID. O P Nayyar was the music director, and the song was a duet by Shamshad Begum and Md Rafi, picturised on Dev Anand and Shakila.
  • Kabhi aar kabhi paar - Aar Paar (1954) : The title track of the movie Aar Paar, directed by Guru Dutt, had music composed by O P Nayyar and was sung by Shamshad Begum. The song was picturised on the lead pair of the movie Guru Dutt and Shakila.
  • Kahin pe nigahen kahin pe nishana - CID (1956) : A classic O P Nayyar-Shamshad Begum offering, this song was picturised on the beautiful Waheeda Rehman playing a seductive vamp in her very first film appearance.
  • Milte hi aankhen dil hua - Babul (1950): This romantic duet by Talat Mahmood and Shamshad Begum was picturised on Dilip Kumar and Munawar Sultana. Legendary composer Naushad was the music director of this movie.
  • Saiyan dil mein aana re - Bahar (1951): Picturised on the beautiful Vyjayanthimala, this song was a huge hit. The remixed version of it also topped the music charts.
  • Boojh mera kya naam re - CID (1956): Another hit song from the hit movie, this song was picturised on Dev Anand, Shakila and Minoo Mumtaz.
  • Mere piya gaye Rangoon - Patanga (1949): This song, picturised on the beautiful Nigar Sultana, was a superhit in the late 1940s.
  • Kajra mohabbat wala - Kismat (1968): In this hit number, Shamshad Begum sang playback not for the heroine, Babita, but for the hero of the movie, Biswajeet, who was dressed in drag. O P Nayyar was the music director and the song was a duet with Asha Bhosle.
  • Teri mehfil mein - Mughal-e-Azam (1960): Two of the biggest female playback singers, Shamshad Begum and Lata Mangeshkar came together for this song, which had music by Naushad and featured Nigar Sultana.
  • Holi aayee re Kanhaai - Mother India (1957): Naushad chose his favourite singer Shamshad Begum once again to sing four out of the 12 songs in Mother India. Out of the four, this Holi song still remains a favourite of many.
