The most public celebrity beakups ever

Granted, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore haven't broken up yet, but their patchy relationship's been chronicled by the media extensively.

When word broke last year that Ashton had had a fling with some unknown groupie, the Hollywood power couple, who had been married five years at the time, laughed it off.

This time, however, when fresh allegations have plagued the two, things haven't seemed so fine and dandy.

Enter Sara Leal, a twenty-something social butterfly who has a penchant for bedding the biggies. Word has it that the night she reportedly slept with Kutcher, she sent a text to all her friends boasting mightily.

Demi Moore, on her part, took to Twitter to express her sadness, highlighting her sorrow with emotional, thought-provoking tweets. Speculation, of course, shot through the roof that the couple were headed for divorce.

This photograph, which shows a drunk Ashton with Leal in tow, proved that the two had, at least, interacted on the night of Kutcher and Moore's sixth anniversary, while Moore was out promoting a new television series.

While 'sources' close to the two stars maintain that their marriage has hit rock bottom, with marriage counselors being called in, Ashton and Demi made their first public outing together when they visited a Kaballah Science Centre last week.

Perhaps the biggest scandal in recent times came in the form of 'Governator' Arnold Schwarzenegger's now defunct marriage to his wife of twenty-five years, Maria Shriver.

The former California Governor and Terminator star revealed that not only had he cheated on Shriver with the couple's maid, Patty Baena, but had also fathered her son, Christopher.

Shriver was heartbroken, they say, because she had always treated Christopher like her own son, even taking the child along on the Schwarzeneggers' family vacations. The world was stunned and Arnold's highly anticipated comeback to the movies was put on hold.

But nothing came even close to Tiger Woods. The world's first billionaire sportsman, Woods stripped down his pristine image and clubbed it to death. The Tiger, once an untouchable force on the golf greens, lost his number one status, a massive part of his fortune, and his beautiful wife, Elin Nordegren.

Woods made famous a rather obscure word in the English langauge: "indiscretions". When he revealed that he had cheated multiple times on Elin with a variety of porn stars, socialites and high-end escorts, sometimes paying them money for their silence, the world seemed to shake with tsunami-like intensity.

After all, Tiger Woods was an international hero.

Paul McCartney, at 65 years of age, is a happy man once again. He recently wed American heiress Nancy Shevell, lifting the cloud set upon him by his estranged wife, Heather Mills. All of the mudslinging that went on during Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney's acrimonious divorce to model-activist Heather Mills wasn't quite enough to tarnish his image.

Ending a four-year-old marriage to McCartney, Mills 'requested' a lump sum of $250 million when she claimed that the singer was worth more than $1.6 billion. A court, however, overruled that claim, stating McCartney was worth 'only' $800 million.

Heather Mills, though, wasn't done; she publicly criticized Sir Paul for trying to ease out of paying her what she felt were her dues; McCartney filed a counter-proposal to award his ex-wife only $30 million, an amount he felt was justified.

The two eventually ended up with the biggest divorce settlement in history, with Mills receiving $48 million, with an additional $70,000 a year for the couple's four-year-old daughter, Beatrice. When the court's ruling was made public, it was revealed that the ruling judge had reprimanded Mills for her conduct throughout the entire process.

After a fairytale marriage in 2002, Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards quickly climbed to the top of the "Wild Weddings" list. The two were frequently spotted, clicked and splashed on tabloids as one heck of a good-looking couple. Sheen's star was on a perpetual rise, Richards had her Bond-girl image imprinted upon her person and everything was hunky-dory.

Until 2005, that is. That's when the proverbial cookie crumbled. Sheen, apparently, threatened Richards on numerous occasions, indulging in bouts of domestic violence that even led to a restraining order against him.

At one point, Sheen publicly told Richards to "go cry" to her "bald mom"--she was suffering from cancer. All in all, it was as ugly as was humanly possible. The two finalized their divorce in 2006 and share two daughters.

As of 2011, Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards are spotted vacationing with their daughters off and on; Richards has gone on record to say that things are better and that she even spends nights at Sheen's residence some times, for the sake of their children.

Charlie Sheen, of course, wasn't done hogging the limelight. His sitcom, Two and a Half Men, became the biggest television show in recent times, topping the ratings previously held by F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

But his personal life was far from funny; having moved on from his bitter divorce to Denise Richards, Sheen married real-estate agent Brooke Mueller. The couple welcomed a pair of twin boys and it was smooth sailing for a while.

As with all things Sheen, this marriage, too, was plagued with allegations of domestic violence and threats. Sheen was arrested for beating Mueller and threatening her with a weapon, as well, but was released on bail soon after.

The two, of course, divorced earlier this year, with Mueller receiving a little more than $1 million and $55,000 a year in child suppport.

We could dedicate an entire gallery to Sheen's antics. Even during his messy divorce proceedings with Mueller, Sheen managed to trump his own card by declaring his association to two "Goddesses".

Adult films star Bree Olson and model Natalie Kenly were Charlie Sheen's girlfriends at the time his life went spiraling out of control (he was fired from Two and a Half Men after a very public spat with the show's creator, Chuck Lorre, which itself was preceded by a cocaine-fueled night of debauchery which ended with him being hospitalized).

While Olson remains fiercely protective of the troubled actor, Kenly's affections don't run as deep anymore. She walked out on him almost as soon as Sheen's career took a nosedive while Olsen, who left him, as well, remained for a while longer.

The two "Goddesses", as Charlie rechristened them, were criticized for trying to rear his twin boys despite the career paths they had so openly chosen. Sheen, once again, lost everything that was keeping him in the public eye, but he managed to salvage himself yet again by bagging a nearly $100 million dollar settlement for his Two and a Half Men ouster. When in doubt, Charlie out?

Lindsay Lohan's relationship with DJ Samantha Ronson wasn't quite as public as the others we have mentioned. But, in a strange way, it was even more so. Doesn't make sense? Read on.

The troubled actress, in and out of jail for various drug- and felony-related crimes, reportedly fell head over heels in love with the popular disc jockey.

The lesbian couple, while never going public, were spotted everywhere together, even getting photographed kissing in cars and clubs. But when Ronson decided she couldn't handle Lohan's erratic behaviour, she broke up with her, leading to a very public meltdown that Lohan still hasn't recovered from.

Oscar winning actress Sandra Bullock had what was assumed to be one of the most successful marriages in Hollywood.

Bullock's five year marriage to Motorcyle King Jesse James ended very suddenly when James admitted to having cheated on her on several occasions.

After a very dignified silence, the Speed actress was back in the public eye, even adopting a baby boy as a single parent.

Funnyman Jim Carrey and his longtime girlfriend, model-actress Jenny McCarthy, were one of the cutest couples Hollywood had on display. They were open about their love for each other and hatred for a redundant marriage certificate. The live-in couple had everything they could possibly want.

Tragedy struck when Carrey announced the end of their relationship on Twitter. While the tweet itself was short and sweet, describing McCarthy as a wonderful person, the aftermath was anything but.

The Bruce Almighty star suffered a very public, online meltdown. He perpetuated the now-famous hashtag (an in-built search system on Twitter) #BOING, which he attached at the end of every tweet, sometimes dedicating the entire 140-characters to the tag.

Almost none of the tweets made sense, while almost all were senseless rants. McCarthy remained silent throughout the episode and Jim Carrey, on his part, took a long hiatus from the social networking site to rework his issues.

When Chelsea footballer Ashley Cole proposed to Girls Aloud vocalist Cheryl Tweedy, the world of entertainment swooned. The stunningly handsome sportsman and the insanely beautiful singer seemed like a match made in Heaven.

That was before Cheryl Cole (as she is now professionally known) caught Ashley philandering left, right and centre. The marriage ended on a bitter note, with the vast majority of the world empathising with Cheryl.

She contracted malaria soon after separating from Ashley and was seen crying and pale for months afterward. Some say that she still hasn't gotten over the footballer and recent reports suggested the two were headed for reconciliation and remarriage.

None of those rumours came to fruition, however, and Cheryl has apparently mentioned she will never get back with Ashley.

This one was a shocker for sure. Model-socialite Katie Price, while maintaining her image of a fiercely flirtatious vixen, always seemed heavily in love with her popstar husband, Peter Andre.

Katie, who was professionally known by the moniker 'Jordan', married Andre in a lavish wedding in 2005. Four years and two kids later, they headed for Hollywood's most favoured destination, Splitsville. Andre publicly stated he was 'devastated' by the proceedings and that he was crazily in love with Price. His wife, on the other hand, blamed him for breaking up with her, but claimed she would always love the man she called 'My Pete'.

While nobody really knows the reason behind their divorce, there are many theories which float around: some say that Andre caught Price openly flirting with a man at a party; moreover, she had deigned to removed her wedding ring and was acting like a single woman.

Others claim that Andre was jealous of Price's constant earnings (she has written four books which reported sales upwards of four million and earns rich dividends from her modelling assignments) while he hasn't delivered a hit in over a decade.

Mel Gibson's divorce to his pretty wife Robyn reflected Arnold Schwarzenegger's marriage to Maria Shriver; the Gibsons ended their marriage after 26 years. They share seven children and two grandchildren.

The Mad Max superstar revealed that the separation began right after he was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) in 2006, where he launched on an Anti-Semetic rant he later apologized for.

In true superstar fashion, Gibson turned the spotlight on himself straight away--during his divorce with Robyn, he was spotted canoodling with Russian pianist Oksana Grigoreiva.

After months of speculation, the two came out as a couple and wed soon after. Oksana gave birth to their daughter in 2009. However, this marriage crumbled very soon, with Oksana filing a restraining order against Gibson, claiming he had hit her and threatened her with extremely vulgar language.

Gibson received a clean chit in the case, though his public image was forever shattered. While he ruled Hollywood once upon a time, he now finds very few takers for his new projects.

Once again, their breakup wasn't nearly as public as it ought to have been; while that might sound crass, how else would you expect a high-profile, nine-year-long relationship to end?

John Abraham and Bipasha Basu made for a stunningly good looking couple. The former models-turned-actors met on the sets of their debut film, Jism and instantly fell in love. Every move of theirs was splashed across the tabloids.

They were seen as the "It" couple for most of their years together. However, things suddenly went downhill when it emerged that Bipasha wanted to take their relationship to the next level: she wanted marriage.

John Abraham, on the other hand, wasn't looking for any such thing and quietly broke up with her. Once again, after months of speculation, the two finally revealed they were no longer together.

In many interviews thereafter, Bipasha has claimed she isn't in touch with John anymore, while John took to a television show to state he was a veritable 'bed-breaker', something Bipasha, no doubt, didn't take kindly to.

While John's current relationship status is unclear, Bipasha seems to have found love in Shahid Kapoor.

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone shared an odd relationship. They both debuted on the same day, with Ranbir's Saawariya flopping six ways from Sunday while Deepika's Om Shanti Om, opposite Shah Rukh Khan, became the then biggest hit of all time. It only made sense for them to be rivals.

Fate ordained otherwise when the two entered a rollercoaster relationship, grabbing headlines galore. They were seen as the next big thing in Bollywood, with both their careers kicking off in the right direction. Everything seemed perfect.

That was before Ranbir's alleged roving eye got the better of him. Deepika, apparently, caught him red-handed with a certain British-Indian actress, one of Ranbir's frequent co-stars. Apparently, though, Deepika gave him another chance which he again squandered, once again with the said co-star.

To add insult to injury, Deepika had tattooed Ranbir's initials, R.K, on the nape of her neck, just a few months before the scandal broke. She avenged herself, however, on Koffee With Karan, when in an episode with Sonam Kapoor, she openly mocked and ridiculed the young Kapoor.

Salman Khan's love affair with the most beautiful woman in the world, Aishwarya Rai, is the stuff of legend.

The eternal bachelor and Bollywood's resident 'bad boy' bagged the former Miss World. The two looked great together and were headed in the right direction, even discussing the possibility of marriage at one point.

Everything changed when Salman apparently raised his hand on her. This was followed by the release of certain audio tapes where Salman was heard abusing her in a very drunk state. Aishwarya called off her relationship with the superstar, breaking clean away.

Salman never really got over her, they say, and had a string of failed relationships that never really culminated into anything. His most high-profile girlfriend of late was Katrina Kaif but the two have broken up, as well.

Aishwarya Rai, of course, married Abhishek Bachchan in a grand ceremony, but only after a brief relationship with actor Vivek Oberoi.

Another case of third party involvement hit Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston's four-year-old marriage.

The extraordinarily good looking couple's marriage was widely considered nothing short of a fairytale.

Both their careers were set, with Aniston's appearance on the sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S making her a household name while all Pitt had to do was flip his hair to make girls faint.

Angelina Jolie changed it all. When Pitt starred opposite the stunning actress in the 2005 blockbuster Mr. And Mrs. Smith, he fell massively in love with her. While Pitt and Jolie maintain that he did not cheat on Aniston during the film's making, some reports suggest otherwise.

Their marriage collapsed immediately and Pitt moved in with Jolie and the two started a family. Aniston, on the other hand, had a string of failed relationships, most notably with comedian Vince Vaughn and singer John Mayer.

What do you get when you cross a publicity-hungry, highly ambitious dancer with one of the world's biggest singers of all time?

A tragic tale of love and loss. Pop superstar Britney Spears fell crazily in love with her backup dancer Kevin Federline, leading to a quickie marriage in 2004. The couple have two children together.

But Federline's blatant love for her money (he splashed out on cars and parties almost immediately after their marriage) became apparent quite soon. Receiving intense support from his famous wife, he even debuted with a highly lambasted rap album.

Britney soon realized her mistake and filed for divorce. Her conduct was deemed dignified while Federline, who was already being criticized for dumping his ex-girlfriend Shar Jackson while she was pregnant with their second child, was mocked in the media throughout.

Britney's relationships haven't exactly mellowed her down. Her first high-profile coupling was with fellow singer, Justin Timberlake.

The two had known each other since they were children and clicked immediately. They were frequently spotted getting cosy and were on top of their games at the same time; she was the biggest singing sensation since Michael Jackson (as the media proclaimed) while his band, *NSYNC, was a rage amongst teenagers worldwide.

But the two couldn't work out their relationship beyond a few years. Their careers took priority and they decided to split. While Justin took it quite well, Britney wasn't so lucky.

She broke down on a television chat show, revealing she had lost her virginity to Timberlake, something she had promised to do only after marriage.

The bane of 'the other woman' didn't spare even Britain's Royals. Prince Charles' wedding to Lady Diana Spencer was the biggest event of the early 80's, a marriage that was watched by more than 750 million people worldwide.

The fairy-tale wedding disintegrated in the early 1990s. It was first suppressed, then sensationalised, by the world media. Both the Prince and the Princess allegedly spoke to the press through friends, each blaming the other for the failure of the marriage.

On December 20, 1995, the Queen sent letters to the Prince and Princess of Wales advising them to divorce.

The divorce was finalised on 28 August 1996.

The first magazine publisher to become a celebrity, Hugh Hefner was left stranded at the alter by 25-year-old Crystal Harris. The 85-year-old Hefner was reportedly in shock when Harris bailed out and walked out of his famed mansion. The magazine tycoon has been married twice before and was hoping this would be his third and last marriage.

Described as one of the most handsome men in all of England, actor Jude Law's relationship with actress Sienna Miller was seen as something of a national asset.

After all, the two made for great press and photographed well together; she, the exceptionally good-looking actress from Layer Cake and he the well-manicured, chocolate boy of a dozen romantic films, nothing could possibly break them apart.

Unless, of course, Jude decided to break the law; it was revealed that Jude had cheated on Miller with his children's (from a previous marriage) nanny, something that Miller (surprise, surprise) didn't take kindly to. They broke apart amongst a media frenzy, fuelled by a very awkward silence on Jude Law's part.

After several brief reconciliations, the couple formally called it off early last year, both having moved on with various partners.
