The Sound of 2014: Top 10 Songs of the Year

top songs of 2014

  • Happy by Pharrell Williams: It seems everyone, just everyone was singing this song - or dancing to it. Happy from Despicable Me 2 made many a soul happy this year. The Grammy nominated track was on the top of the party list and prompted a veritable deluge of videos featuring people, celebs and non-celebs, getting jiggy to it.
  • Baby Doll from Ragini MMS 2: Put actress Sunny Leone in a video and you have a chartbuster guaranteed to rule airwaves. It helped that the Meet Brothers and Anjjan had delivered a tune so catchy you founf yourself humming it when least expected. The peppy song became an instant party anthem.
  • London Thumakda from Queen: Meanwhile, Kangana Ranaut Queen-ed it over the charts with awkward-innocent thumkas that were replicated by everyone on the dance floor. The song's reverberating rhythm by composer Amit Trivedi forced many non-dancers onto the floors this year.
  • Ata Majhi Satakli from Singham Returns: No song list is complete without a Yo Yo Honey Singh number. The actor-composer ruled the charts with filmy songs like Chaar Botal Vodka, Party With The Bhoothnath, Yaar Naa Miley and non-filmy ones like Hip Hop, Desi Kalakar and Love Dose. But Ata Majhi Satakli was a force of nature unto itself.
  • Galiyaan from Ek Villain: Composers Mithoon and Ankit Tiwari followed the success of their soundtrack for Aashiqui 2 in 2013 with a score for Ek Villain that included tracks like Banjaara, Zaroorat. Our favourite was the soulful Galliyan, for which Ek Villain heroine Shraddha Kapoor provided the female vocals.
  • Patakha Guddi from Highway: There is no match for a spell cast by the music of AR Rahman. Add to that the Sufi style and touch of singers Sultana and Jyoti Nooran, and you get Patakha Guddi from Highway.
  • Shake Your Bootiya from Finding Fanny: One of the peppiest songs this year was Shake Your Bootiya from the unconventional Finding Fanny. What added to the song's funny lyrics was its animated video.
  • Tu Meri from Bang Bang: Actor Hrithik Roshan was back with a Bang Bang this year. The film was packed with blockbuster-worthy ingredients, including a chartbusting soundtrack that included the sensational Tu Meri.
  • Jumme ki Raat from Kick: Swag alert! This time Salman Khan, not particularly admired for his dance moves, stunned fans in this foot-tapping number from Kick. While Salman's antics had everyone in splits, Jacqueline's krumping and thumping solo in the song left everyone awestruck.
  • Whistle Baja from Heropanti: Actor Tiger Shroff was this year's surprise dance package. You simply couldn't look away from the actor's rippling moves, helped by the fact that composers Sajid-Wajid had borrowed the famous musical refrain from 1983 film Hero, the movie that made Tiger's dad Jackie a star.
