The Sound of 2015: Top 10 Bollywood Songs of the Year

Here's our 10 favourite songs of 2015. You're welcome.

  • The soundtrack of 2015 was a mix sweeping melodies and catchy beats, from Dilwale's Gerua to Baajrangi Bhaijaan's Selfie Le Le Re. Among the also-rans were modern recreations of older numbers - Honey Singh's update of Dheere Dheere from 1990 film Aashiqui and the remade Mere Humsafar from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. One old-new number does make it the final 10 - we'll let you find out which it is. Here's our 10 favourite songs of 2015. You're welcome.
  • Banno Tera Swagger from Tanu Weds Manu Returns
    Composer: Krsna Solo
    Singers: Brijesh Shandllya, Swati Sharma

This Tanu Weds Manu Returns number reinvented the traditional 'Banno' song to suit the bride of the 21st century. From surme daani-like eyes to sexy swagger, it celebrated the modern woman.
  • Gerua from Dilwale
    Composer: Pritam
    Singers: Arijit Singh, Antara Mitra

Shah Rukh Khan + Kajol + Song = Delight.

Rohit Shetty's film Dilwale used this simple formula to create the song Gerua. Shot in chilly Iceland, the song bears a striking resemblance to Sooraj Hua Madham from SRK-Kajol's Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. But who cares? Shah Rukh and Kajol make every song magical and Gerua is no exception.

Gerua was special also because it was the first song released by Team Dilwale and SRK-Kajol fans had been waiting for almost five years to get a glimpse of them together onscreen again.
  • Chittiyan Kalaiyaan from Roy
    Composer: Meet Bros Anjjan
Singers: Meet Bros Anjjan, Kanika Kapoor

Roy itself failed to make a dent at the box office but its music certainly didn't pass us by. The song Chittiyan Kalaiyaan, featuring actress Jacqueline Fernandez, has been on the top 10 list since its release in February. The song became popular thanks to its quirky beats and catchy lyrics.
  • Pinga from Bajirao Mastani
    Composer: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
    Singers: Shreya Ghoshal, Vaishali Made

Another revamp of sorts is Pinga from Bajirao Mastani. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali-orchestrated dance-off between Paro and Chandramukhi's Devdas' in Dola Re reappears in the form pf a Maharashtrian lavani featuring Mastani and Kashibai. Deepika Padukone as Mastani and Priyanka Chopra as Kashibai put up a spectacular show in Pinga. (Image courtesy: Twitter)
  • Selfie Le Le Re from Bajrangi Bhaijaan
    Composer: Pritam
Singers: Vishal Dadlani, Nakash Aziz and Pritam. Rap by Badshah

Bajrangi Bhaijaan was Salman Khan's first blockbuster this year. The film included a song which cashed in on the ongoing selfie trend. Add peppy music, have Salman dance along with pint-sized Bajrangis and you have a readymade chartbuster all set to entertain.
  • Fifi from Bombay Velvet
Composer: O P Nayyar (re-created by Mikey McCleary)
    Singer: Suman Sridhar

There was little to redeem the debacle that was Bombay Velvet but its soundtrack, a heady jazz-filled concoction that contained a masterful re-imagining of Geeta Dutt's famous song Jata Kahan Hai Deewane from CID. The song was released in two versions, one which was a part of the film's soundtrack and the other mixed by Mikey McCleary. Both were ingenious.
  • Prem Ratan Dhan Payo title track
    Composer: Himesh Reshammiya
    Singer: Palak Muchhal

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was Salman's second blockbuster of the year, and its title track went viral almost instantaneously. The song, which has an old-world charm (thank you, Sooraj Barjatya), is picturised primarily on Sonam Kapoor. Sonam's thumka series to the chorus of the song was endlessly copied in a series of Dubsmashes. Leading the queue were Helen, Waheeda Rehman, Salman's Bajrangi Bhaijaan co-star Harshaali Malhotra and many, many more.
  • Matargashti from Tamasha
    Composer: A R Rahman
    Singer: Mohit Chauhan

There's no reworking here, this Tamasha song is pure Matargashti. Picturized on Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone's escapades in Corsica, the song is super cute. With its beats and music, Matargashti is the perfect antidote to the blues and make you dance in your seat. Ranbir Kapoor's expressions and moves cannot be missed.
  • Jee Karda from Badlapur
    Composer: Sachin & Jigar
    Singer: Divya Kumar

Varun Dhawan's dance skills were better showcased in ABCD 2 while Badlapur focused on his acting - but not exclusively. This is the story of how Varun ruled Jee Karda with highly dramatized dance moves.
  • Main Hoon Hero from Hero
    Composer: Amaal Mallik
    Singer: Salman Khan

And it's Salman Khan again - but this time not as actor but as singer. To give an extra push to his protegees Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty's Bollywood debut film Hero, Salman provided the vocals for its title track. This soft romantic number entered everyone's playlist overnight. (Image courtesy: Facebook)
