Will Rahman do a Jai ho at the Grammys?

Last year he shone at the Oscars and now A R Rahman leads a pack of three Indian musicians in race for a Grammy.

Rahman is nominated for two gramophones for his Slumdog Millionaire score in the Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media and Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media categories (Jai ho).

Tabla wizard Zakir Hussain, who won a Grammy last year, has bagged a nomination in the Best Classical Crossover Album category for the album The Melody of Rhythm.

It features Leonard Slatkin, Bela Fleck, Hussain and Edgar Meyer (Detroit Symphony Orchestra).

Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is nominated in the Traditional World Music category for his album Ancient Sounds in collaboration with Iraqi oud artiste Rahim Alhaj.

The 52nd Grammy Awards will take place at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

R&B singer Beyonce leads the field of contenders with 10 nominations while teen country sensation Taylor Swift has eight.

Hip-hop band Black Eyed Peas, R&B singer Maxwell and rapper Kanye West each have six nominations while legendary band U2, glam singer Lady Gaga and rapper Jay-Z earned five nods each.

Apart from various performances, previous winners Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson, Carrie Underwood, and Usher will join together, along with the voice of Michael Jackson, in a moving tribute to the pop legend.

Only three Indians have won Grammys till date- Pt Ravi Shankar (thrice), Hussain (twice) and Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.

In 2009, Hussain won a gramophone in the Contemporary World Music Album category for his collaborative album Global Drum Project with Mickey Hart of Grateful Dead, Nigerian percussionist Sikiru Adepoju and Puerto Rican jazz percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo.

Sankar was the first Indian to win a Grammy in 1967 for his performance West Meets East with violinist Yehudi Menuhin in the "Best Chamber Music Performance" category.

He went on to win another Grammy in 1972 when "The Concert For Bangladesh" featuring him, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Leon Russell, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Eric Clapton and Klaus Voormann was named "Album Of The Year".

He won it for the third time in 2001 for his album Full Circle - Carnegie Hall 2000 in the "Best World Music Album" category.

Bhatt, creator of Mohan Veena, won the Grammy along with guitar guru Ry Cooder for A Meeting by the River in the "World Music Album" section.

Hussain won a "Best World Music Album" Grammy in 1992 for Planet Drum, an album co-created and produced with Hart.
