A Look At Para Athletes Who Bagged Medals At Hangzhou Asian Para Games 2023
Indian para athletes secured more than 100 medals at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games that took place in the month of October this year. The week-long sports event was held at Hangzhou, China from October 22, 2023 to October 28, 2023
India had sent 313 athletes to the Hangzhou Asian Para Games and the athletes competed in 17 out of 22 sports, with athletes being fielded for the first time in rowing, canoeing, lawn bowl, Taekwondo and blind football.
The paralympic Committee of India President Deepa Malik said, "We have expected between 110 to 115 medals and we ended at 111, the auspicious number (Angel Number)."
The Indian shuttlers ended up with the second highest medal tally with 21, including four gold. In the chess and archery, India won eight and seven medals respectively while shooting contributed six.
Sheetal Devi, from Jammu and Kashmir, was born with Phocomelia syndrome and bagged three medals (two gold and one silver) in the Hangzhou Asian Para Games and became the first world's first armless woman archer.
In the women's 61 kg para powerlifting division, Zainab Khatun and Rajkumari took home silver and bronze, respectively. While Rajkumari managed a successful lift of 84 kg, Khatun managed to lift 85 kg.
Tokyo Paralympics silver medallist Bhavina Patel took home a bronze in the women's singles Class 4, and Sandeep Dangi earned another bronze in the men's singles Class 1 to complete his table tennis medal tally with two wins.
In the Men's Javelin Throw-F46 final, Sundar Singh broke yet another world record with a throw of 68.60 metres, winning the gold. In his sixth and last try, the throw beat both the Asian Record and the Games record.
