The collision occurred at around 3 in the morning when the Hampi Express, travelling from Hubli to Bangalore, rammed a stationary goods train near near Penneconda.

As a result of the collision, two coaches of the Hampi Express derailed and caught fire.

Several people are still said to be trapped inside the damaged coaches.

The cause of accident has not yet been established, a railway spokesperson said.

Rescuers are now using metal cutters to get inside the bogies where the passengers are stuck. They fear finding more charred bodies near the entry and exit passage
