Big Guns Line Up For Delhi Assembly Election Battle

The hectic and high-profile run-up to the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections are seeing political parties bringing out their big guns to the fight.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally for his party at the Ramlila Maidan.

Without taking names, he launched a scathing attack on the AAP, saying what Delhi needed was development and not 'anarchists', an allusion to AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal's characterisation of himself as such.

BJP president Amit Shah too has been addressing a string of rallies across Delhi.

Not one to go quietly, former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has focused his energies on attacking the BJP.

At a press conference on January 16, he levelled graft allegations against Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay and said the BJP was behind attempts to spark communal violence. He received a notice from the Election Commission for violation of the Model Code of Conduct for these comments.

7 - The Congress has projected former Union Minister Ajay Maken as its face for the Delhi polls.

The Congress will field former Delhi minister Kiran Walia against Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi Constituency.

Another notable Congress candidate will be President Pranab Mukherjee's daughter, Sharmistha Mukherjee, who will be fielded in the Greater Kailash Constituency.

However, Delhi Congress cheif Arvinder Singh Lovely has been pulled out of the fray for 'organisational work', after initially being named as the candidate for the Gandhi Nagar Constituency.

11 - BSP chief Mayawati too threw her hat into the ring, announcing that her party would contest all 70 seats.

Another prospective entrant into the battle for Delhi has been the Maharashtra-based Shiv Sena, whose chief, Uddhav Thackeray, has said his party is considering entering the fray. In the event it does, the Sena would not be eyeing any alliance, he added.
