Borewells turn into Death Traps

This is not the first time a child has accidently fallen into a borewell.

In July 2006, a 5-year-old boy named Prince was rescued from a 2-and a half feet in diameter, 60-foot deep borewell when he fell down while playing near it in his village in Haryana. The rescue then had lasted over 48 hours and was aided by Armymen who miraculously managed to pull Prince out.

Although 2-year-old Sonu was not so lucky. In October 2009, Sonu fell into a 150-feet borewell in his village near Agra. Even though authorities launched a massive effort to rescue him, unfourtunately, he could not be saved. (NDTV photo)

In yet another incident last year, Sahil got stuck at about 150 feet in a 260 feet deep borewell in Jaipur's Jagatpura village. He fell head first into the borewell at about 7.30 am on a Monday morning last november. (NDTV photo)

Mother of the deceased said he had fallen in the same nullah last week too. She pulled him out, gave him a bath and he was fine.

In yet another distressing case in Mumbai, a three-year-old child fell into a gutter while playing on Sunday night last December. The boy, Ayub, fell into the manhole around 8:30 to 8:45 p.m. (NDTV Photo)

To add to the family's woes, Ayub's maternal grandfather passed away due to extreme stress over the child's welfare.

Local residents were livid over the incident and said the gutter had been open for five months or so and the civic authorities did nothing despite many complaints. (NDTV Photo)

Days later there was no news of Ayub who fell into the gutter while running.

"My child is gone. It's been 4-5 months since this gutter has been like this," said Ayub's distraught mother. (NDTV Photo)
