A fire engulfed the Carlton Towers, a building near the Old Airport road in Bangalore killing nine people and injuring 16 others on Tuesday evening.
The building houses many offices and commercial establishments. -
The fire started at around 3 pm, on the third floor of the building.
People were trapped on floors above the third. Those on the lower floors managed to walk out or were helped out. -
People were waving from windows in desperation, handkerchiefs around their faces. They were trying to break windows to escape.
-
Six fire engines were rushed to the area.
There is a huge traffic jam around the building hampering rescue efforts as more fire tenders are finding it difficult to reach the spot. -
The ladders being used by the firefighters weren't high enough to allow them to reach the higher storeys. There was too much smoke inside the building for the people trapped at the top to be able to move towards the ground floor.
-
Ropes were being dropped from the roof of the building so that people could grab them through windows and then be pulled up to safety by firefighters.
