Fire near Science City in Kolkata

There was a major fire in a bustee area behind Science City complex in Kolkata on Friday.

A major fire broke out in a tannery and spread swiftly to an adjacent slum close to a five-star hotel and Science City, an educational park, in Kolkata on Friday.

The fire began around 11:30 am in the morning in the area inhabited by leather workers.
It is beleived that the presence of chemicals and highly inflammable substances in the area may have made the fire worse.
Twenty fire engines were rushed to the spot.

There were no reports of any casualties though and the fire was later under control.
Interestingly, the fire chief was passing by the area when he saw the smoke and immediately called in the engines, even before the police or the locals had called the fire department.
The fire resulted in a massive traffic jam on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
