Named after the Roman God of war, Mars is also called the Red Planet because of the presence of iron oxide on its surface, which makes it reddish in colour.
The surface of Mars is pitted with craters, many of which are named after scientists and those who have contributed to the study of mars. Other are named after towns and villages on Earth.
