The ban coincided with assembly by-elections in seven constituencies where the Congress is believed to be stronger. The ban is seen as BJP's attempt to gain some points in the run up to the polls.
The fight is for the Patel vote. The Patels have visible clout in Gujarat, specially in the region of Saurashtra. They own almost everything here, literally.
