-
The Gujarat government tried to ban the book in the name of Sardar Patel.
-
But Sardar's memorial in Ahmedabad is not in great shape.
-
The ban coincided with assembly by-elections in seven constituencies where the Congress is believed to be stronger. The ban is seen as BJP's attempt to gain some points in the run up to the polls.
-
The fight is for the Patel vote. The Patels have visible clout in Gujarat, specially in the region of Saurashtra. They own almost everything here, literally.
-
Saurashtra was home to Mohammad Ali Jinnah's family. This is the lane in Moti Paneli village where Jinnah's family lived.
-
Ghulam Hussain, an old shopkeeper, remembers Jinnah's visit to the village a few years before Independence.
-
A few kilometres away is the city of Rajkot where Mahatma Gandhi spent his childhood years in a house called 'Kaba Gandhi No Delo'.
-
The house owned by his father has been converted into a museum.
-
The pictures are striking. A contemplative Gandhi.
-
Gandhi seen here in animated conversation, almost arguement, with Jinnah.
-
Sardar walks ahead, silent and serious, as Gandhi follows with Abdul Gaffar Khan and Nehru.
-
Finally, a painted mural depicts Gandhi battling the violence of partition as Nehru and Sardar take on the charge of Independent India.
