‘Swachhata Hi Seva' (Service for Sanitation) cleanliness drive has begun ahead of the third anniversary of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The massive drive led by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation aims to mobalise people from all walks of life - from President Ram Nath Kovind, celebrities, politicians, faith leaders, corporate honchos and the aam janta urging them to end open defecation and undertake shramdaan for cleanliness in tourist and public places.   • At the launch of Swachhata Hi Seva campaign in Ishwari Ganj, Kanpur, President Ram Nath Kovind took pledge to maintain cleanliness along with everyone present. The President congratulated every resident of the Ishwari Ganj village for successfully eradicating open defecation from the village. "Swachhta is no longer just the responsibility of government departments or officials. Mahatma Gandhi had said this decades back," said President Ram Nath Kovind.

The UP CM said that when the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan had begun, many people questioned the necessity of it. The mission has now become a people's movement. The Chief Minister also stated that over 10 lakh toilets have been built in the past six months and 15,000 toilets are being built every day. 10,000 villages and 4 districts in the state have become ODF. The state's aim is to build 78 lakh toilets to make Uttar Pradesh open defecation free by October 2018.
