Inaugurated by King George V exactly a century ago, Opera House saw it's first play staged for the inauguration even before it was fully ready. It officially opened to the public on 16 October, 1916.
The iconic structure was privately owned, there was no provision or laws to receive funds from the Government for its upkeep. The Gondal family took a call to renovate it in 2009.
Part of the foyer at the newly renovated Royal Opera House. The chandelier is from philanthropist David Sassoon's home in Malabar Hill in erstwhile Bombay that came to the Opera house, though it's not known exactly how.
