Ms Jayalalithaa flew from Chennai to Bangalore on Saturday morning to attend the hearing, which took place in a makeshift court created at the Bangalore Central Jail on the outskirts of the city. (Press Trust of India Photo)

The case against Ms Jayalalithaa is 18 years old and was filed by Subramanian Swamy, now a BJP leader. On Saturday, there were angry protests against Mr Subramanian in Chennai by supporters of the AIADMK.

Stones were thrown at the Chennai residence of DMK chief M Karunanidhi. Supporters of the DMK and the AIADMK clashed near his residence.
