Jayalalithaa appears before Bangalore court for corruption case
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayanthi Jayalalithaa is appearing before the special court in Bangalore today. She has been charged of amassing wealth beyond her known source of income when she was the Chief Minister from 1991 to 1996. The Supreme Court today rejected the Chief Minister's latest attempt to skip that appearance. The court rejected her concerns about inadequate security.

The route from the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) airport, where Mr Jayalalitha's special aircraft landed, to the court, has been sanitised. The court has turned into a virtual fortress; no private vehicle is allowed within one and a half kilometres. Only lawyers involved in the case have been allowed to enter the court premises. Section 144 has been imposed around the court till the hearing is over.

She had been told last month by the Supreme Court to attend a hearing at a special court inside the Central Prison. Her lawyers have been asking for an exemption for security reasons. But the Supreme Court turned down their request following an affidavit filed by the Karnataka Chief Secretary and The Director General of Police assuring the court of foolproof security measures in tune with her Z-plus status and NSG cover.
