In Srinagar, hundreds of residents remain trapped on roof-tops after the heavily-swollen Jhelum river flooding large parts of the city.
About 22 air force helicopters and four aircraft have been deployed to evacuate stranded people and to deliver relief. About 120 Army units and eight teams of police reservists, equipped with boats and life jackets, were in action.
The Army and Air Force have also launched an operation on a war footing to restore mobile services which have been badly hit because of the flood.
A total of 80 villages in the Valley have been provided assistance, food packets and medicines, Army spokesperson said. With thousands of people trapped on the second floor, third floor or on the rooftops, Army plans to continue the rescue operations even at night, the spokesman said.
The Army has distributed 23,000 litres of water and 600 kgs of biscuits in the flood-affected areas along with 4,000 blankets and 90 tents.
