The fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections started this morning with seven states voting to elect representatives to 51 seats in the Lower House of Parliament. More than 87 million people across seven states are eligible to vote in this phase, which includes some of the country's most electorally-important regions such as Uttar Pradesh, the state with the most members of parliament. The number of seats that were voted for were 14 in Uttar Pradesh, 12 in Rajasthan, seven each in West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, five in Bihar, four in Jharkhand, and two in Jammu and Kashmir. The fifth phase saw voting in many high-profile seats, such both Rae Bareli and Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, which are traditional Congress strongholds. With this phase, election will be over in 424 seats and polling in the remaining 118 seats will be held on May 12 and 19. Election to 542 Lok Sabha seats is being conducted in seven phases between April 11 and May 19.
