Narendra Modi's First Visit to Jammu and Kashmir as PM

On his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir after taking over as Prime Minister,Narendra Modi flagged off a new train to Katra, the base town for the Vaishno Devi shrine

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today flagged off a new train from Katra in Jammu and Kashmir, the base for the Vaishno Devi shrine, which is expected to ease the pilgrim rush in Jammu city. This is Mr Modi's first visit to the state after becoming the Prime Minister.
  • Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the rail link, Mr Modi suggested that the new train should be named Shreeshakti Express, and said that it will aid in the development of the region.
  • Mr Modi also acknowledged the role Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the effort to link Jammu and Kashmir to the rest of the country
  • The train connectivity to Katra is part of the ambitious Kashmir rail link project marking region's rail connectivity with the rest of the country. The Katra-Udhampur rail section has been built at a cost of 1132 crores.
  • The rail link that has been inaugurated today has seven tunnels, 29 minor and nine major bridges, and the Jhajjar bridge, country's longest steel girder bridge that is built at a height of 85 metres. The train will also pass through 3.1 km long tunnel, said to be India's longest.
  • Mr Modi has a packed schedule in the state today as he will also visit Uri to inaugurate the second phase of a hydel power project. He will return to Delhi in the evening.
  • There is massive deployment of security personnel in Srinagar and other sensitive places in the wake of a strike by separatists protesting against Mr Modi.
  • From Katra, Mr Modi will head to Jammu and kashmir's capital Srinagar, where he will address troops of the Indian Army at the Badami Bagh Cantonment. He will later have lunch with Governor N N Vohra at the Raj Bhawan.
