Newspaper Headlines: Arun Jaitley's Death Headlines Page 1 Of All Papers

All the newspapers are leading with former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who died on Saturday, two weeks after he was admitted following complaints of breathlessness. He was 66.

  • The Times of India reports that Arun Jaitley, who was Finance Minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first cabinet, passed away shortly after noon after a third cardiac arrest after being revived twice. Mr Jaitley was battling multiple illness - a diabetic, the 66-year-old BJP leader was most recently diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma.
  • The Indian Express: "A skillful strategist, an eloquent orator, a delightful raconteur, and a trained lawyer, he was the prime troubleshooter for his party," says the Indian Express on Arun Jaitley. While Arun Jaitley had been a staunch Congress critic throughout his political career, Mr Jaitley was also the one the BJP tapped for reaching out to other parties.
  • Hindustan Times: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Arun Jaitley shared a close personal and political bond, reports Hindustan Times. PM Modi, who visited the AIIMS hospital in Delhi soon after Mr Jaitley was admitted to the hospital on August 9, paid an emotional tribute to the former union minister at an event in Bahrain. "I cannot imaging that I am here so far away and my friend in gone," he said.
  • The Telegraph reports that Arun Jaitley was a suave English speaker, who was ready to articulate the BJP's position persuasively before the educated classes and the media. "He seemed more like a pedigreed Congress leader than a BJP leader," the paper quoted a unnamed BJP insider as saying.
  • The Asian Age reports that Arun Jaitley was perhaps among the BJP bigwigs who made a smooth transition from the Atal-Advani era in the party to the one where Prime Minister Narendra Modi dominated.
