Newspaper Headlines: Top Court On Citizenship Act's Petition, India's Fall On Democracy Index

  • Hindustan Times: The daily leads with the Supreme Court's order on the petitions filed on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The top court yesterday refused to put a stay on the implementation of the CAA and said the petitions would be heard by a five-judge Constitution bench. The court has also granted centre four-week's time to file a comprehensive response. The newspaper also carries the rise in death toll due to the new virus, allegedly emerged from the Chinese city Wuhan. The mysterious coronavirus has taken the life of 17 people in China and has forced several countries worldwide to heighten efforts to contain a possible wider outbreak.
  • Times of India: The government is set to allow direct listing of Indian companies abroad as part of a plan to give them access to a larger pool of capital and enable the move towards fuller capital account convertibility, the daily reported. The newspaper also has a US report, that talks about Pakistan's options on Jammu and Kashmir. The report suggests Pakistan has "limited options" to respond to India's decision to scrap Article 370, a move that stripped J&K of its special status and bifurcated the state into two Union Territories. The report further says Pakistan can only hope to gain from "self-inflicted" damage caused by New Delhi's policies in Kashmir and on the Citizenship Amendment Act.
  • The Telegraph: In the backdrop of delay in the hanging of convicts of the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case, the centre yesterday approached the Supreme Court to propose a seven-day deadline for execution after the issuance of a death warrant, the daily reported. The government said the current rules favour the convicts as it allows them to "play with the law and delay execution". The newspaper also carries India's fall in the Democracy Index. India has dropped 10 places in the Democracy Index 2019.
  • Deccan Herald: The newspaper leads with the BS Yediyurappa-led BJP government notifying the anti-superstition law that was passed three years ago. The law bans 16 practices, including human torture in the guise of religious rituals among several others.
