On 100 Years of World War I, Army Celebrates Role of Indian Soldiers

For a century, it has been India's forgotten war - a war in which more than 74,000 Indians were killed. Now, on the centenary of World War One, the government and the Indian Army is recognising the sterling contribution of Indian jawans.

74,363 Indians were killed in World War I.

Between August 1914 and November 1918, 15,00,000 Indians were recruited to fight the Great War.

Indian soldiers fought in France, Belgium (Flanders), Mesopotamia and Persia, East Africa, Gallipoli and the Far East.

Indian soldiers won 11 Victoria Crosses, the highest war time gallantry medal for valour.
