Operation Everest Summiteers Visit Khumjung School Established by Sir Edmund Hillary

  • Situated at an elevation of 3970 meters, Khumjung village is nestled in the valley of mountains all around. The main crowd - pleasure place is the Sir Edmund Hillary School and Khumjung Monastery. It also has a hospital - The Khunde Hospital built by Edmund Hillary which provides free treatment to the local Sherpa. The village also has an updated and modern communication set ups. The area is very small and has an approximately 500 households all together.
  • The group went up till the Khumbjung Village for their acclimatization walk. This acclimatization walk helps them to get along with the surroundings and atmosphere around them which make the mountaineers body and mind more accustom with the zone.
  • The Hillary school at Khumjung village was established in the year 1961 by the Himalayan Trust but has a formal agreement with the Nepal government. The school is named after Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to reach the Everest summit. It is said that the school initially started with one single classroom but in the present year it has almost doubled its size.
  • 'It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.' - Sir Edmund Hillary The first to conquer the highest peak in the world - The Everest, was from New Zealand. He along with Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay climbed the Everest on 29th May, 1953. He has a school in his name in Khumjung village which provides secondary education till 10th standard.
  • The Indian Army went to the Sir Edmund Hillary School and made a small effort to create an atmosphere of gaiety and happiness among the school children by distributing stationeries and candies to them.
  • The school has a very small turnout of 400 students approximately.
